Pevchesky Bridge

PEVCHESKY BRIDGE (Chants' Bridge), over the Moika River, at Pevchesky Passage, opposite Palace Square, besides the building of the Pevcheskaya (Choral) Chapel, (hence the name of the bridge). The bridge was built in 1839-1840 (engineer E.A. Adam) to replace a wooden girder bridge built here in 1834 (architect A.A. Montferrand) to let the troops participating in the parade for the opening of Alexander Column pass through to Palace Square. The span of the bridge was covered with a hingeless cast-iron tubbing vault. The rubble abutments are faced with granite. The cast-iron tracery railing of the bridge serves as its principal decoration. The bridge is about 24 metres long and 72 metres wide.
