HOLY RESURRECTION CHURCH, located at 116 Obvodny Canal Embankment, an architectural monument. The church was commissioned by Society for Religious and Moral Education, constructed in 1904-08 to the designs of architect G. D. Grimm with the assistance of architects G. G. von Goli and A. L. Gun in the Russian style with Art Nouveau elements. It replaced the wooden church of the same name that was moved from Nikolaevskaya Street in 1894. In 1914, the facade decor was completed. In place of columns the church has an impressive central lantern dome drum, crowned with a cupola and 64 meters high hip-roofed belfry. It features three side-chapels and holds 4,000 people. The corners of the building are shaped as towers crowned with domes. Icons were painted by the pupils of the school of the Trustee Committee for Russian Icon Painting; the interior paintings were completed in 1914-16 by V. T. Perminov who followed the patterns that were used for the mosaic of the Church of Our Saviour on Blood. From 1914, the church belonged to the Alexander Nevsky Brotherhood of Sobriety, which established its headquarters in the building. The neighbouring house accommodated a religious school, a library and a reading-room, all under the care of the church; there were also two amateur choirs for workers and a missionary school. In 1920, in the vestibule a heated side-chapel was consecrated for winter services. In October 1930, the church was closed, the building was used as a storehouse. In 1989, the church was returned to the faithful, divine services resumed in 1990, but the building is still under reconstruction.
