ENGLISH CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST, located at 56 Angliiskaya Embankment, was established in 1723 by members of the English community in the house of the Sheremetev family on the Bolshaya Neva River Embankment, rented by them. In 1753, the building was acquired by the British chancellor. The hall of prayer, decorated in Italian style, was opened on 6 March 1754. In 1814-15, the building was redecorated according to the project by architect J. Quarenghi in the Empire style. The main facade had a portico with six columns crowned by a three-cornered pediment with sculptures of Faith, Hope and Love. The hall of prayer with two entrances is decorated with Corinthian columns and pilasters. In 1860, the hall was redecorated (by architect A. K. Pehl), the decor of the facade was changed in 1877-78 (architect F. K. Boltenhagen). At the end of the 19th century the interior was decorated with stained glass panels. In 1919, the church was closed; its archives were relocated to London. The building housed the City Bureau of tours and travel (today it is a subsidiary of the Conservatory).
