Categories / Architecture/Cemeteries (see also Municipal Economy)

KOMENDANTSKOE CEMETERY is situated in the presbytery of SS. Peter&Paul Cathedral, and it was intended exclusively for burials of governors of Peter and Paul Fortress. 19 out of 32 governors of the fortress were buried there. The first to be buried in 1720, was Lieutenant General R.V. Bruce (1668-1720; governor since 1704), the last one, Lieutenant General K.V. Komarov (1852-1912, governor since 1908). In the 1960s-80s, archaeological research of Komendantskoe Cemetery was undertaken (led by V.A. Grach), a memorial plaque was installed on site of some lost monuments. In 1969-83, restoration work was conducted at the cemetery (project of architect I.N. Benois); the territory encompassed in 1841 by a metal fence was developed.
