STATE ELECTROTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY "LETI", St. Petersburg (SEU) (5 Professora Popova Street) was founded in 1886 as a technical school for the Post and Telegraph Department. In 1891, it was named Electrotechnical Institute, in 1899-1917; it was given the name of Emperor Alexander III, in 1918-92 the name of V.I. Ulyanov (Lenin). In 1992, it received its present-day name and university status. The university is associated with the work of radio inventor A.S. Popov, scientists Zh.I. Alferov, A.I. Berg, N.P. Bogoroditsky, I.I. Borgman, A.A. Vavilov, V.P. Vologdin, G.O. Graftio, V.F. Mitkevich, S.A. Rinkevich, V.I. Siforov, V.V. Skobeltsyn, A.A. Smurov, S.Y. Sokolov, I.G. Freiman, A.A. Kharkevich, O.D. Khvolson, M.A. Shatelen, A.N. Shchukin, et al. University pedagogues took an active part in the development and realisation of the most important agricultural plans (GOELRO, etc.) and defence buildings. SPSEU realises programs in higher, postgraduate and additional professional education. In 2002, the university had facilities for radiotechnics and telecommunications, electronics, computer technologies and informatics, electronics and automatics, instrumentation, biomedical and ecological engineering, economics and management, humanities, and open university studies (evening classes, extramural and intramural forms of education, non-residence). The educational and methodical association, which develops standards of higher professional education in Russia in the domain of automatics, electronics, microelectronics and radio technology. Many Russian and foreign educational and research institutions are permanent partners of SEU. The university is situated in specially constructed buildings (1900-03, architect A.N. Vekshinsky; 1958, architect S.B. Speransky; 1976, architect V.L. Leviash).
