WOMEN’S POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, the first ever Russian technical institution of higher education for women. It was established in 1905 on the initiative of a group of scientists with a financial support of the Society for Funding Women’s Technical Education as the St. Petersburg Women’s Polytechnic Courses. The courses consisted of four departments: the Department of Architecture, the Engineering-Construction Department, the Electromechanical Department, the Chemical Department. It became an institute in 1915. The apprenticeship lasted for 5-7 years. Graduates of the institute of 1912 were the first women in Russia to receive the right to work as engineers. Architects L. N. Benois, I. A. Fomin, professors I. G. Alexandrov, N. A. Belelyubsky, S. D. Kareisha, V. I. Kurdyumov, N. L. Shchukin (the first director) were among the lecturers of the institute. In 1918, the institute started accepting men also, and became a state institution of higher education under the name of the Second Polytechnic Institute. The institute was closed in 1924. The institute was initially located at 68/2 Zagorodny Avenue. At the beginning of the 1920s, the institute was located at 3 Tenth Line of Vasilievsky Island.
