VELODROMES. The first velodrome in St. Petersburg with the seating capacity of 10,000 spectators was opened in 1895 on the Kamenny Island; for a short period cycle tracks functioned in Strelna. In 1925-34 there were cycling tracks built at Lenin Stadium (currently, Petrovsky Stadium). In 1954-56, a velodrome was built near Poklonnaya Gora (81 Engelsa Avenue) according to the project of architects I.V. Pokhitonov, N.N. Stepanov, and L.M. Khidekel for Burevestnik Amateur Society; featuring a racing track of 333.3 m in length and the seating capacity of 10,000 thousand. City-wide, national, and international tournaments took place there. In 2003, the racing tracks with a 250 m-long race-track, partially roofed, with a seating capacity of 2,500 was opened (12 Severnaya Road).
