KIKINY PALATY (Kikin's Chambers) (9 Stavropolskaya Street), an architectural monument of the Petrine Baroque. Constructed in 1714-20 (architect A. Schluter) for the Admiralty Councillor A.V. Kikin (about 1675-1718), extended and reconstructed in the 1720s (unknown architect). The two-storey facades are adorned with paired pilasters, the central part with a high porch and side corbels are accomplished with figured pediments. The architecture of Kikiny Palaty is reminiscent of the central part of the Grand Peterhof Palace. In 1718, Kikin was executed for organizing Alexey Petrovich's escape from Russia, and the Kikiny Palaty was forfeited. In 1719-1727, collections for the future Kunstkammer and library of Peter the Great were quartered, and since 1733 it served as the chancellery, field hospital and church for the Cavalry Life Guards Regiment. In 1829, the building was rebuilt (architect. A. E. Shtaubert), the Baroque decor was destroyed. In 1941-1944, Kikiny Palaty were extensively damaged, in 1952-56 they were reconstructed to their original condition (architect I.N. Benois). Nowadays Kikiny Palaty houses a music lyceum.
