AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, fully named the St. Petersburg State Agricultural University, situated at 2 Peterburgskoe Highway, Pushkin. It originates from the Agricultural School established in Tsarskoe Selo in 1797. The university was founded in 1922 after the integration of three institutes: the Stebut Agricultural Institute established in 1918 on the basis of the higher women's agricultural courses founded by I. A. Stebut in 1904; the Kamennoostrovsky Agricultural Institute; and the Petrograd Agronomical Institute. Renamed the Leningrad Agricultural Institute in 1922, it received the status of university in 1991 and its current name in 1992. Among its teachers and researchers were N. I. Vavilov, K. D. Glinka, M. I. Dyakov, S. P. Kravkov, M. N. Letoshnev, E. F. Liskun, V. N. Sukachev, et al. The university comprised 12 departments in 2002: soil science and agricultural ecology, agronomy, plant conservation and quarantine, horticulture, animal breeding, mechanisation and technical service, agriculture building, agriculture electrification, health and safety, economics, land utilisation, and humanitarian teacher's training. The university possesses large education and production facilities including specialised and problem laboratories, research facilities, test workshops, hostels, and stadiums.
