BOTANICAL MUSEUM, located at 2 Professora Popova Street, is the only botanical museum in the country. The museum dates back to the Botanical Museum of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences established in 1823 and officially opened in 1835. The museum is included in the structure of the Botanical Institute since 1931. The Botanical Museum is based on the collective funds of Aptekarsky Garden established in 1714 with the purpose of growing herbs by order of Peter the Great. The collection of the Botanic Museum (approximately 120,000 exhibits in 2003) contains plants from all the continents brought to St. Petersburg by the expeditions of N. I. Vavilov, P. K. Kozlov, V. L. Komarov, N. M. Przhevalsky et al. Paleobotanical exhibits include unique items of cycadaceous from the bennettites family, which are now extinct. The exhibits demonstrate the richness and variety of the plant kingdom, its history and evolution. Special sections are devoted to the use of plants by mankind and to the problems of environmental protection. The photograph library of the Botanical Museum contains approximately 10,000 objects. The Botanical Museum was closed for repairs in 1999.
