Ladoga Military Flotilla

LADOGA MILITARY FLOTILLA, a unit of the USSR Navy formed in October 1939 to participate in the Soviet-Finnish War. In November 1940, it was reorganized into a training detachment. In June 1941 the Navy unit was re-formed. The unit had its base first in Sortinlakhti; from 25 August 1941, in Schlisselburg; and from 8 September 1941, at in Novaya Ladoga. In 1941-43, the flotilla's ships and vessels were used as transportation accompaniment and convoys along the Road of Life, delivering goods and reinforcements to Leningrad, and evacuating citizens and the wounded. Flotilla ships were providing artillery support for land operations, and landing behind enemy lines. On 4 November 1944, the flotilla was disbanded.
