FARMAKON (18 Tsvetochnaya Street) is an open joint-stock company (from 1992), the largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the region. It was established in 1907 as a factory of pharmaceutical and chemical products, Farmakon joint-stock company, making mostly herbal and endocrine medications. In 1919-22 the factory did not work. In 1925 the factory was nationalised. The factory produced endocrine medications, disinfection materials, and adhesive patches. Making of the first synthetic remedy – Phenacetin — started in 1932, and Pyramidon was first made there in 1936. In 1938 Farmakon started making complicated organic synthesis medications. In 1941-45 the factory produced antiseptic К soap and Д chloramine used in the treatment for typhus as well as Sulfidine, Streptocid, Pyramidon, and Analgin. At the end of the 1950s, there were 21 synthetic remedies made at Farmakon, including Dibasol, Dimedrol, Trimethadione, Pentoxyl, and Thiphen. The section for making of Diketene, the first one in the country, was put in operation in 1960, followed by introduction of new anticonvulsant, somnolent, antispasmodic, antineoplastic, hematogenic, and anesthetic remedies. Through the early 1990s, the factory was a part of Oktyabr Chemical and Pharmaceutical Association. In the 1990s, the factory was reconstructed and new products were launched, among them vitamins, antidiabetic, antineoplastic, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic, psychostimulant and somnolent remedies. Farmakon is one of the few enterprises of Russia with organic synthesis capacity. The major shareholders of the company are Russian Medicine insurance company, the Ministry of Property Relations of the Russian Federation, Neva Media Dtm open joint-stock company, Globe Business Investment LLC (USA) and Bank Credit Suisse First Boston Joint Stock Company.
