GENERAL STAFF ACADEMY (until 1855 - the Imperial Military Academy, from 1855 - the Nicholas General Staff Academy, from 1909 - the Imperial Nicholas Military Academy), advanced military scientific and educational institution, founded in 1832. Education consisted of two to three years. Officers of all military branches up to the rank of Staff Captain were accepted to the General Staff Academy. It had two basic departments: command, and surveying departments. The General Staff Academy graduates had the right of fast promotion to the next rank and taking up command posts in battalion and regimental divisions, and first class graduates could serve in the General Staff, if they so desired. The General Staff Academy was the largest centre of Military Science in Russia. Military historians and theorists taught there: A.K. Baiov, N.S. Golitsyn, D.A. Milyutin, G.A. Leer, et al. The Academy was situated in the former Collegium of Foreign Affairs at 32 Angliiskaya Embankment, from 1909 - in a specially constructed building (32 Suvorovsky Avenue; architect A.I. von Gogen, engineer A.A. Vedenyapin; today the Military University of Telecommunication is situated there). In early 1918 it was evacuated to Kazan, where its contingent went over to the anti-bolshevik army of Admiral A.V. Kolchak. The Academy was dissolved in 1921.
