ZAZERKALIE (Behind the Mirror), children's musical theatre (state-owned from 1989). It was established as an independent theatre company and a part of the children's department of Lenconcert with the assistance of the Main Cultural Administration in August, 1987. A main part of the company was formed of graduates group of the Leningrad Theatrical Technicum. The theatre was directed by their professors director A.V. Petrov and conductor Pavel Bubelnikov. On December 27, 1987, Zazerkalie opened its first season with Leonid Desyatnikov's opera Bravo-Bravissimo, Pioneer Anisimov, or No One Wants to Sing. From 1989, the theatre was located in Shelgunov Recreation Centre (House of Culture) and in 1994 it moved to 13 Rubinsteina Street. Its repertoire is composed of performances of Russian and foreign composers’ music, including that which was not intended for theatrical production: Peter Tchaikovsky's Children's Album and Bach's Christmas Oratorio; as well as classic operas: Stravinsky's A Soldier's Tale, Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffman, Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme, Johann Strauss's The Bat; and the modern productions: Roman Lvovich's Hobbit and Efrem Podgaits's Through the Looking Glass. Honoured actors Elena Ternovaya and Yury Davidenko are members of the company from its earliest days. The best actors Vitaly Gordienko, Elena Popel and Alena Resanina are involved in many performances. Zazerkalie is not only a children's theatre, but also a family theatre.
