VOTIC FIFTH (Vodskaya Pyatina), one of five administrative-territorial entities of Novgorod Land, which were subdivided into principalities, regions and districts. According to the Novgorod Chronicles of 1500, Votic Fifth encompassed the territory between the Luga and Volkhov rivers, the Neva Region (see Ingermanland), the Karelian Isthmus, and the Northwest Ladoga Region. The name of Votic Fifth is connected with the Votes people, who were the territory's original inhabitants. In the 15-16th centuries, Votic Fifth was distinguished by its developed handicraft industry, including iron ore production and blacksmithing. Votic Fifth remained an administrative-territorial entity even after Novgorod region was joined with Moscow; it was abolished during Tsar Peter the Great's administrative reforms (1708-10).
