LENINGRAD FRONT. Joint USSR armed forces during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 fighting against German and Finnish troops in Leningrad Region and in Estonia. Formed on 23 August 1941 from a part of Northern Front troops in order to defend Leningrad. The Front held the combat line from 8 September as it approached Leningrad from the southwest and the south, the southern outskirts of Kolpino, and then along the Neva up to Lake Ladoga; on the Karelian Isthmus, it held the line along the old Soviet-Finnish border and at the Oranienbaum Bridgehead. In 1941-42, the Front conducted the Sinyavino Operations. In January 1943, it broke the Siege. In January - July 1944, it played a key role in the Lifting of the Siege, and continued its offensive. In July, it forced Finnish troops back from the Karelian Isthmus. In September - November, it released the territory of Estonia, where it remained until the end of the war. In July 1945, the Leningrad Front was reorganized into the Leningrad Military District. At various times, the Leningrad Front included 21 combined-arms armies, four Aviation armies, a number of task force groups, and separate groups of troops and units; the Baltic Fleet and the Ladoga Military Flotilla occasionally came under its command. Commanding the front were Lieutenant General M.M. Popov (until September 1941), Marshal of the Soviet Union K. E. Voroshilov (September 1941), General of the Army G.K. Zhukov (until October 1941), Major General I.I. Fedyuninsky (October 1941), Lieutenant General M.S. Khozin (until June 1942), and Lieutenant General, then Colonel-General, General of the Army, Marshal of the Soviet Union L.A. Govorov (until July 1945).
