GEOLOGICAL PROSPECTING MUSEUM, Central Research Geological Prospecting Museum Named after F.N. Chernyshev (74 Sredny Avenue of Vasilievsky Island), one of the world’s largest natural science museums. The foundation of its collection was laid in 1882 with the establishment of the Geological Committee. It was opened to the public in 1930 and in the same year named after Academician F.N. Chernyshev. The museum treasures over one million specimens of earth material, ore, minerals and petrifaction. The exposition encompasses three sections: areal geology, minerals and a paleopathology collection. Since 1989, the 26.6 m2 mosaic map of the USSR, created in Peterhof lapidary factory in 1936-37, has been on display in the central hall of the museum. Over 4,000 ornamental stones were used to create this masterpiece. In 1948-82, it was exhibited in St. George Hall of the Hermitage.
