BALLET THEATRE was founded under the guidance of Boris Eifman under the auspices of Lenconcert in 1977. At different times it had different names: the New Ballet, The Leningrad Ballet Ensemble, and the Leningrad Theatre of Modern Ballet. Its repertoire mostly consists of ballets created by Boris Eifman: Two Voices, with music by Pink Floyd (1977), Boomerang, on Bertold Brecht's The Threepenny Opera with music by John McLaughlin (1979), The Idiot on Tchaikovsky's Symphony # 6 (1980), Russian Hamlet with music by Beethoven and Mahler, et al. Eifman's ballets combine classical, modern and other expressive means of dancing. During his North American tour Eifman was noted as today’s most successful Russian choreographer. At different times, his ballet troupe included Alla Osipenko, John Markovsky, Valery Mikhailovsky, Valentina Morozova, A.G. Gordeev, Igor Markov, Albert Galichanin, Vera Arbuzova, Elena Kuzmina, at al.
