ST. PETERSBURG OPERA (33 Galernaya Street), the state chamber musical theatre was established in 1987, director Y.I. Alexandrov. The opening ceremony took place on the theatre’s stage in the Yusupov Palace. Its first performances - Adam del la Halle's Jeu de Robin et Marion and Valery Piguzov's I Believe - defined the creative principles of the theatre: turning to operatic sources, reconsidering classics, staging new works and attracting listeners to 20th century music. The theatre repertoire includes Gaetano Donizetti's La Singara, Rita, and Don Pasquale; Verdi's Rigoletto; Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov; Peter Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades; and Smelkov's The Star of Emraine; and other productions with Dmitry Shostakovich's music (The Gamblers-1942 and Antiformalistik Rayok), et al. The theatre attracts such conductors as Robert Luther, A. Afanasyev, and Mikhail Vinogradov, scenic designers Vyacheslav Okunev, Semen Pastukh, and Zinovy Margolin; and choreographer Gali Abaydulov. The company includes the honoured actors of Russia Nina Glinkina, Valery Aleshkov, and Olga Kovaleva. The theatre's productions are known with an individual and non-traditional approach to staging classic and new works.
