RUBINI Giovanni Battista (1794-1854), Italian singer (tenor). Made his first appearance in 1814 subsequently, excelling as a vocal performer in G. Rossini's, V. Bellini's and G. Donizetti's operas. In 1843-45 and 1847, he performed in Saint Petersburg. After his first concert in Saint Petersburg on 4 March 1843, he was offered roles in 15 productions of the times' most popular Italian operas: Rossini's Othello, Bellini's I puritani and La sonnambula, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor . According to A. G. Rubinstein and A. A. Grigoryev, Rubini's singing stunned the audience. A decision was taken to revive the Italian Opera, which had been dissolved in 1831, and Rubini was commissioned by the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres to Italy to organize together, and he returned in the fall as the director of the new Italian Opera (see Italian Opera). The first season opened with Rubini performing in a trio called the divine trio, including Rubini, А. Tamburini, Pauline Viardot-Garcia. Under Rubini, the popularity of the Italian Opera reached its peak. In 1847, Rubini retired from the stage.
