FINDEIZEN Nikolay Fedorovich (1868, St. Petersburg - 1928), music critic, historian of the Russian music, music figure. Graduated from the Commercial School, took music lessons in composition from N.A. Sokolov (1890-92). Was in contact with youth from the company of V.V. Stasov, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, shared their outlook on the importance of a national folk component in the Russian art. In 1894 he founded the first serious Russian music periodical The Russian Music Newspaper (published until 1918), then The Society of Friends of Music (1909; together with A.I. Ziloti), and The Historical Music Museum of the Philharmonic (since 1920 the State Historical Music Museum, under his direction). From 1919 he gave courses in music archaeology and palaeography at the Archaeological Institute, and from 1925 he headed the Committee of Folk Music Study of the Geographic Society. In 1903-11 he published 6 editions of Music History: A Collection of Articles and Materials on the History of Russia to the end of the 18th century (in 2 vol., 7th edition. Moscow; Leningrad, 1928-29), which remains a classic of Russian music criticism. Findeizen published music scores, bibliographic works, and collections of letters and reminiscences devoted to M.I. Glinka, A.S. Dargomizhsky, and C.A. Cui. In 1909 Findeizen lived at 6 Gogolya Street (today Malaya Morskaya Street). His print-shop was situated on the same street, at house № 9. The office of The Russian Music Newspaper was located at 9 the Ninth Rota (today the Ninth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street).
