PETIPA Marius Ivanovich (1818-1910), French ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher. He studied under his father J. Petipa and A. Vestris. Invited to St. Petersburg as a mime dancer in 1847, he danced until 1869. A teacher in St. Petersburg's Theatre School in 1855-87, he worked as a choreographer of the Imperial Company regularly from 1862 and its chief choreographer in 1855-87. He created over 60 ballets for the Bolshoy Theatre and Mariinsky Theatre, including C. Pugni's Pharaoh's Daughter in 1862, L. F. Minkus's Don Quixote and Bayadere in 1871 and 1877, P. I. Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake in 1890 and 1895, the latter choreographed together with L. I. Ivanov, and A. K. Glazunov's Raymonda and Trial of Damis in 1898 and 1900. Petipa created the so-called grand ballet to combine classical dances, divertissement suites, and pantomime scenes. He was one of the first to realise that ballet was similar to music in that it had its inner content independent of a plot. He himself composed episodes mainly to develop a theme and emphasise choreography. His collaboration with Tchaikovsky and Glazunov confirmed the truth of his ideas, which became the basis for a new trend in the 20th century, whereby music dictated the form of the ballet performance. Petipa's ballets featured E. O. Vazem, M. S. Surovshchikiva-Petipa, Ivanov, K. Brianza, F. I. Kshesinsky, P. A. Gerdt, E. P. Sokolova, V. A. Nikitina, O. I. Preobrazhenskaya, M. F. Kschessinska, M. M. Petipa, et al. He lived at 53 Fontanka Embankment and 12 Zagorodny Avenue and died in Gurzuf. He was buried at Volkovo Cemetery, his remains moved to the Necropolis of Artists in 1948.
