PAVLOVA Anna Pavlovna (1881 - 1931, St. Petersburg), ballet dancer. Studied under P. A. Gerdt in the Petersburg Theatre School, graduating in 1899. She joined the company of the Mariinsky Theatre to dance the key parts in M. I. Petipa's Giselle, Paquite, Bayadere, and Corsaire, A. A. Gorsky's Don Quixote, and M. M. Fokine Armida's Pavillion and Chopiniana, etc. She also danced with the Russian Seasons Abroad in 1909. Pavlova was a new age dancer. She developed a new vision for her roles in Petipa's ballets in terms of the 20th century by bringing in emotional tension and drama. She was the best performer of Fokine's ballets, including Saint-Saens' Swan choreographed in 1907 and later renamed Dying Swan. Dancing at the Mariinsky Theatre occasionally from 1910, she established her own company which was a triumphal success abroad. Her last concerts were performed in the People's House, St. Petersburg, in 1914. She lived at 5 Italianskaya Street (memorial plaque) and 21 Angliisky Avenue.
