GLIER Reingold Moritsevich (1874-1956), composer, conductor, pedagogue, People's Artist of the USSR (1938), Doctor of Arts (1941). Graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1900. Among Glier's numerous works, his ballet Bronze Horseman stands out, its premiere given on the stage of the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre (see Mariinsky Theatre) in 1949 (Stalin Prize, 1950). The finale of this ballet, Hymn to a Great City, has been adopted as the Leningrad / St. Petersburg city anthem. Glier was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1946 and 1948.
