Categories / Art/Music, Theatre/Personalia

DALSKY (born Neelov) Mamont Viktorovich (1865-1918), actor. He studied law at Kharkov University but quit as he was in his second year in 1885. He worked as an actor in the country and at E. N. Goreva's theatre in Moscow in 1889-90. Working at the Alexandrinsky Theatre in 1890-1900, he performed over 70 parts including Zhadov and Neznamov in A. N. Ostrovsky's Profitable Post and Guilty Without Guilt, Rogozhin in F. M. Dostoevsky's Idiot, impostor in A. S. Pushkin's Boris Godunov, Chatsky in A. S. Griboedov's Woe from Wit, as well as Shylock in the Merchant of Venice, Othello, and Hamlet by Shakespeare. A man with a strong artistic temperament, Dalsky had a passion for decorative elements of acting that he liked to improve. He toured Russia from 1900. When in St. Petersburg, he used to play at the theatre of the Literature and Art Society. Driven by strong ungovernable passions, his characters were persecuted by and in conflict with society including Karl and Franz Moorland in Robbers and Don Carlos and Marquis of Posa in Don Carlos by F. Schiller, Uriel Acosta and Ruy Blas in K. Gutzkow's and V. Hugo's plays of the same name, Kean in A. Dumas' Kean, or Disorder and Genius, and Corrado in P. Giacometti's Civil Death. He seldom played new roles after 1907. He withdrew from the stage and joined the anarchists after the February Revolution of 1917. He was killed in Moscow and buried at Nikolskoe Cemetery in St. Petersburg; his remains were reburied at Necropolis of Artists in 1936.
