GERASIMOV Sergey Apollinarievich (1906-1985), film director, actor, and teacher; People's Artist of the USSR in 1948, Ph.D. (Art History) in 1967, and Member of the Academy of Educational Sciences of the USSR in 1978. He was also awarded Hero of Socialist Labour in 1974. He graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Stage Arts in 1928. He first appeared on screen as an actor of the Factory of Eccentricity in 1924. He worked as a director at Lenfilm Studio from 1930. He played about 20 roles creating a number of eccentric and grotesque images such as the secret agent in Mishkas Against Yudenich of 1925, an interrogator in Devil's Wheel of 1926, an official in Overcoat of 1926, Medoks in Club of the Big Deed of 1927, journalist in New Babylon of 1929, chairman of a local council in Alone of 1931, and unknown in Masquerade of 1941. He directed about 25 films, of which the following were shot in Leningrad: Seven Brave Men in 1936, Komsomolsk in 1938, Teacher in 1939, Masquerade based on Lermontov's play in 1941, and Invincible in 1944, the latter devoted to the first months of Leningrad siege. Along with other directors working at Lenfilm in 1930s, Gerasimov developed a new trend - psychological drama - showing interest in the present-day life and a social character. He lived at 60 Nekrasova Street. He lived and worked in Moscow after the war. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941, 1949, and 1951, the State Prize of the USSR in 1971, and the Lenin Prize in 1984.
