TELYAKOVSKY Vladimir Arkadyevich (1861, St. Petersburg [?] - 1924, Leningrad), dramatist, Privy Councillor (1909). After graduating from the Page Corps, he served with the Guards from 1879 to 1898. In 1888, he graduated from the Nikolaevsky Academy of the General Staff. he was appointed Manager of the Moscow Office of Imperial Theatres in 1898, a position he held until 1901, when he became Director of the Imperial Theatres. He held this office until 1917. During his term as director, he continued and developed reforms conceived by his predecessor, Prince S.M. Volkonsky; he promoted the perfection of repertoires, improved the artistic level of staging, attracted new talent, and developed the Institute of Stage Directing for the St. Petersburg Imperial Stage (represented by A.A. Sanin, V.E. Meyerhold, A.N. Lavrentyev, A.L. Zagarov, and N.V. Petrov). With regard to artistic creativity on the stage, he attracted the best performers from the World of Art Union (Mir Iskusstva), such as K.A. Korovin, A.Y. Golovin, A.N. Benois, and L.S. Bakst. Telyakovsky provided support to the pioneering work of choreographers A.A. Gorsky and M.M. Fokine. He summoned F.I. Chaliapin, L.V. Sobinov and many other talented performers to appear on the Imperial stages. He also engaged K.S. Stanislavsky to work with young opera singers from the Bolshoy Theatre. After October 1917, he worked on his memoirs, based on his journals from 1898-1917 (Memoirs of 1898-1917, Petrograd, 1924; Imperial Theatres and the Year 1905, Leningrad, 1926; Chaliapin, a Colleague of Mine, Leningrad, 1927; all were collected in Memoirs, Leningrad; Moscow, 1965). Currently, the Telyakovsky diaries are in the process of being published (Diaries of the Director of the Imperial Theatres. 1898-1901. Moscow. Moscow, 1998; Idem. 1901-1903. St. Petersburg. Moscow, 2002). In 1901-17, he occupied the Director of the Imperial Theatres' Government issued flat at 6 Alexandrinskaya Square (present-day Ostrovskogo Square; the building now houses the Museum of Theatre and Musical Art).
