STRZHELCHIK Vladislav Ignatievich (1921, Petrograd - 1995, St. Petersburg), actor, People"s Artist of the USSR (1974), Hero of Socialist Labour (1988). In 1938-47, he studied at the school-studio of the Bolshoy Drama Theatre under B.A. Babochkin and A.D. Diky. In 1940 he began working as a supporting actor. In 1940-46, he was in the ranks of the Soviet Army (at the front in 1941-45). In 1947, he joined the BDT"s troupe, and was at once acclaimed as a jeune premier. When G.A. Tovstonogov came to the theatre in 1956, Strzhelchik proved himself to be also an outstanding character and comic actor (Repetilov in Woe from Wit by A.S. Griboedov, Prince Pantiashvili in Khanuma by A. Tsagareli and others). Among his best-known roles are Tsyganov (Barbarians by M. Gorky), General Epanchin (Idiot based on F.M. Dostoevsky"s novel), He (The Forth by K.M. Simonov), Kuligin (Three Sisters by A.S. Chekhov ), Gregory Solomon (The Price by A. Miller), Mashkov (Traditional Gathering by V.S. Rozov), Henry Percy (Henry IV by W. Shakespeare), Adrian Fomich (Three Sacks of Unsorted Wheat based on V.F. Tendryakov"s story), Salieri (Amadeus by P. Sheffer), Actor (The Lower Depths by M. Gorky), and Barney Cashman (Last of the Red Hot Lovers by N. Simon). In 1941, he started working in film, and in the 1960s began to appear on television. In 1959-66 lectured at the Leningrad Institute for Theatre, Music, and Cinematography, and in 1970 joined the Musical Production Faculty of the Conservatory. He was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1971) and the Golden Soffit Prize (1996; posthumously). In 1998, the Strzhelchik Independent Actor Prize was instituted. Strzhelchik lived at 47 Basseinaya Street in 1971-90 (memorial plaque installed, 1997).
