YUTKEVICH Sergey Iosifovich (1904, St. Petersburg - 1985), film director, theorist, stage designer, People’s Artist of the USSR (1962), Ph.D. in art history (1941), and Hero of Socialist Labour (1974). Studied at the Higher State Directing Workshop and the Academy of Arts in 1921-23. Lived in Leningrad from 1928, working as a director at Lenfilm and opening the first film workshop there. He directed over 30 films, and wrote 13 books and approximately 400 articles. The films he directed in Leningrad include Lace (1928), Black Sail (1929), Golden Mountains (based on the story Krasny Putilovets Plant, 1931), Counterplan (or Shame, 1932) with co-director F. M. Ermler, Miners (1937), and Man with a Gun (1938). In 1939 he moved to Moscow. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941 and 1947, and the State Prize of the USSR in 1967 and 1983.
