UCHITEL Efim Yulievich (1913-1988, Leningrad), documentary film director, script writer, cameraman, People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). After graduating as a cameraman from the Leningrad Institute of Motion-Picture Engineers in 1935 he worked at the Leningrad Newsreel Studio. Shot over 50 films and events for newsreels and special news shows. Worked as a military cameraman during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. Concentrated most of his films on Leningrad, such as Leningrad in Combat (1942), Leningrad (1947), with R. Karmen as a co-director, Leningrad’s Heroic Deed (1959), Meeting Leningrad (1970), Leningrad: Years and Events (1974), and Leningrad - Hero City (1975). He also shot Russian Character (1957), Workers’ Stories (1965), Your Generous Heart (1967), Vilegodskie Men (1971), Irina Kolpakova (1978), and Good Morning, People (1981). He was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1967, and prizes at the All-Union Film Festivals of 1967 and 1978. His name is part of the memorial plaque installed at the Studio of Documentary Films at 12 Kryukov Canal Embankment. He lived at 14 Bolsheokhtinsky Avenue, and buried at Serafimovskoe Cemetery.
