ZHAKOV Oleg Petrovich (1905-1988), actor, People’s Artist of the USSR (1969). Graduated from the Leningrad School of Stage Arts in 1929. He played about 60 roles in Russian cinema, starting with bit parts in films by G. M. Kozintsev and L. Z. Trauberg. He played his first major roles in Ice Destiny directed by V. M. Petrov in 1930, and Wind in the Face directed by I. E. Heifits in 1930. He mostly played young moderns in the 1930s, including radioman Kurt in S. A. Gerasimov's Seven Brave Men (1936), Yan Draudin in E. L. Dzigan's We Are from Kronstadt (1935), and German antifascist Rolf in G. M. Rappoport and A. Minkin's Professor Mamlock (1938). He played unlikable roles deeply and ambiguously, such as professor Vorobyev in Heifits's Baltic Deputy (1937) and Borovsky in F. M. Ermler's Great Citizen (1939), his performance characterised by psychological tension and outer restraint. He lived and worked in Moscow after the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. He was awarded a Stalin Prize in 1946 and a State Prize of the USSR in 1971.
