AVERBAKH Ilya Alexandrovich (1934 - 1986, Leningrad), film director and script writer, recipient of the Honoured Art Worker of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1976. Graduated from the First Leningrad Medical Institute in 1958 and completed Higher Script Writing Courses in Moscow in 1964. After completing Higher Directing Courses at Lenfilm in 1967 he started working as a director for Lenfilm. He directed nine feature films, including Risk Degree in 1968, Monologue in 1973, Another's Letters in 1976, awarded a prize at the First International Film Festival in Naples, Declaration of Love in 1978, and Voice in 1982, all characterised by a delicate lyricism. On the Banks of the Fascinating Neva, a semi-documentary television film devoted to St. Petersburg, was shot in 1984 upon the request of Italian TV for the European Capitals of Culture cycle. Averbakh's were psychological films, a tradition typical of Lenfilm. He lived his last years at 55 Kirovsky Avenue. He was buried at Memorial Cemetery in Komarovo.
