INSTITUTE OF ARTISTIC CULTURE, State. The institute was organised in 1923 on the basis of the Museum of Artistic Culture, and was located at 9 St.Isaac's Square. The Institute of Artistic Culture included the Formal-Theoretical Department (headed by K. S. Malevich, with such members as I. G. Chashnik, L. M. Khidekel, L. A. Yudin, and V. M. Ermolaeva); the Department of Organic Culture (headed by M. V. Matyushin, with such members as B. V. Ender, M. V. Ender, and K. V. Ender); the Department of Material Culture (headed by V. E. Tatlin, with such members as N. A. Khapaev and E. A. Nekrasov); and the Department of General Ideology (headed by N. N. Punin). Associate departments operated for some time, and included the Experimental Department (headed by P. A. Mansurov) and the Phonological Department (headed by I. G. Terentyev). The institute attempted to develop art in ways unorthodox for art history, and demonstrated its results at report exhibitions (1924, 1926). In 1926, the State Institute of Artistic Culture was united with the State Institute of Art History (see the Institute of Art History).
