UGAROV Boris Sergeevich (1922, Leningrad - 1991, Leningrad), painter and graphic artist, full member (1978) and president (from 1983) of Academy of Arts of the USSR, People's Artist of the USSR (1982). He studied in the Academy of Arts (1945-51) under Viktor Oreshnikov and Andrey Mylnikov, and his post-graduate course in the Academy of Arts (1951-54) he studied under Alexander Gerasimov. From 1952 he taught in the Academy of Arts; became professor (from 1971), president (in 1977-83), head of the easel painting studio (from 1979) and the creative studio (from 1987). In 1975-79 he was elected the chairman of the Leningrad organization of the Artists' Union of the RSFSR. Ugarov represents the last generation of social realism masters. He created paintings on the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, genre scenes, city and village landscapes, still lifes, and portraits (A Citizen of Leningrad in 1941, 1961-62; Spring in the Volkhov Front, 1971; Composer Andrey Petrov, 1971; The Revival, 1980, the State Prize of the USSR, 1985; Alexander Pushkin, 1985). He made a series of drawings called Leningrad (1969). Ugarov's works are represented in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, and other museums of Russia.
