PROKOFIEV Ivan Prokofievich (1758 - 1828, St. Petersburg), sculptor and drawer. He studied at the Academy of Arts (1764-79) under N.F. Gillet and F.G. Gordeev. Received a retainer from the Academy of Arts to study in Paris (1779-84), where he worked under the guidance of P. Julien. In 1784 he began directing the sculpture and medallist classes at the Academy of Arts (among his pupils were I.P. Vitali, F.P. Tolstoy), becoming a member in 1785. He was one of the founders of Classicism in Russian sculpture. Some of his monumental-decorative plastics include the Genius and Arts bas-relief in the building of the Academy of Arts (1786), reliefs for Pavlovsk Palace (1785-87) and Mikhailovsky Castle (1799), Alcides, the bronze sculptures Triton and Magus (1800-01) for the Big Cascade in Petrodvorets (destroyed by the German army, reconstructed in 1950, sculptor I.V. Krestovsky), the Worshipping a Copper Serpent relief in a west wing attic of Kazan Cathedral (1806), the Neptune with the Two Rivers - Neva and Volkhov sculpture group at the facade of the Bourse building (1810), and the bronze lines at the quay of Admiralty Embankment (1815). He also worked as a drawer and portraitist.
