KAPLAN Anatoly Lvovich (1903-1980, Leningrad), graphic artist. From 1922 he lived in St. Petersburg (Leningrad), and studied in the Academy of Arts (1922-27) under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin and Arkady Rylov and in the experimental lithographic workshop of the Union of Artists, Leningrad branch (1937-40) under Georgy Vereysky. He created several groups of lithographs on Jewish literature and folklore: Jewish National Songs (1958-60), Sholom-Aleichem's The Bewitched Tailor (1953-63), Tevye's Daughters (1957-61), Stempenyu (1963-67) et al. The original national nature of his works is defined by the use of decorative elements and symbols of Jewish folk art and ethnographic details. In 1944-47, he created a series of lithographs Leningrad. In 1950-51, he worked as main artist of the Leningrad Decorative Glass Factory and produced a stained-glass window Mikhail Lomonosov for the main building of Pulkovo Observatory. Later, he made tempera works, gouaches (the cycle on Dmitry Shostakovich's suite on Jewish folk poetry) and ceramics. In 1950-70s he lived at 6 Petropavlovskaya Street. He is buried at the cemetery of the Victims of January 9.
