KOZLOVSKY Mikhail Ivanovich (1753 - 1802, St. Petersburg), sculptor, representative of Classicism. Studied at the Academy of Arts from 1764 until 1773 under N.F. Gillet and A.P. Losenko, and became a member in 1794. Received a retainer from the Academy of Arts to study in Rome (1774-79) and Paris (1779-80). Created the monument to A.V. Suvorov (bronze, 1801) at Suvorovskaya Square and Samson Tearing the Lion's Mouth (bronze, 1802; reconstructed in 1947, sculptor V.L. Simonov) for the Big Cascade in Petrodvorets. He made marble bas-reliefs for the Marble Palace (1780-81), gypsum reliefs for the Friendship Temple in Tsarskoe Selo (1783-84), an allegoric marble sculpture called Alexander the Great's Wake for the Tauride Palace (1785-88, the State Russian Museum), and an idealised statue of Empress Catherine II (1796, the State Russian Museum). Kozlovsky's works are characterised by clarity of composition and emphasised emotionality. He lived at 16 First Line of Vasilievsky Island. He was buried at the Necropolis of the 18th Century (monument built in 1803, sculptor V.I. Demut-Malinovsky).
