SHISHKIN Ivan Ivanovich (1832-1898, St. Petersburg), painter and graphic artist. He attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1852-56, then studied at the Academy of Arts from 1856 to 1860 under S.M. Vorobyev. Shishkin held a scholarship of the Academy in Munich, Prague and Duesseldorf from 1862 to 1865. He became a member of the Academy in 1865, to assume the office of its professor in 1873. In 1893, he was elected a fellow of the Academy of Arts; at the same year he took over the supervision of the landscape painting class of the Academy of Arts which he headed until 1895. Shishkin was a founding member of the co-operative Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions. Shishkin specialised in forest landscape painting, and his best works represent generalised epic images of the Russian natural environment: The Backwoods, (1872, State Russian Museum), Rye (1878), A Morning in the Pine Forest (1889, both reposited in the State Tretyakov Gallery), Pine Wood. Ship's Timber (1898, State Russian Museum). His other works include landscape drawings, etchings and lithographs. He lived at 30 Fifth Line of Vasilievsky Island from 1882; there he held regular Wednesdays, where itinerant artists met. Shishkin was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery, with his remains transferred to the Necropolis of Artists later.
