FEDOTOV Pavel Andreevich (1815-1852, St. Petersburg), painter and graphic artist, fellow of the Academy of Arts (1848). A graduate from the First Moscow Cadet Corps, he rendered his service at the Finlyandsky Life Guards Regiment in St. Petersburg in 1834-44. Fedotov attended evening classes of the Academy of Arts, where his tutors were A.I. Sauerweid and K.P. Bryullov. Fedotov was the first to introduce critical realism into Russian painting. He painted ironical and sharply satirical genre paintings: A Fresh Admirer (1846), Courting of a Major (1848), Aristocrat's Breakfast (1849), Encore, Encore! (1851-52, all of them reposited in the State Tretyakov Gallery). In addition, he performed some lyrical portraits: N.P. Zhdanovich (1849, State Russian Museum) and A Young Widow (1851-52, State Tretyakov Gallery). His numerous graphic sketches render various scenes of the life of St. Petersburg, along with the types of citizens. He also wrote poetry on the subject of his paintings, and composed several romances which he set to music. He lived at 56 Sredny Avenue of Vasilievsky Island (1844-49), and 8 Twenty-first Line of Vasilievsky Island (from 1849; the house was not preserved). Fedotov died in a mental clinic (the Hospital for All Who Sorrow) and was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery. In 1936 his remains were re-interred in the Necropolis of Artists.
