UGRYUMOV Grigory Ivanovich (1764 - 1823, St. Petersburg), painter and teacher. He studied at the Academy of Arts in 1770-85, and taught painting at the same institution from 1791 onwards. In 1797 he was admitted to the Academy as a member, to be promoted to the post of professor in 1800. In 1820 he was appointed Rector of Painting at the Academy. His students included A.E. Egorov, V.K. Shebuev and O.A. Kiprensky. Ugryumov painted monumental canvases on various subjects from the Russian history. His works were a blend of features typical of Russian classicism, such as compositional approaches reminiscent of theatrical conventions and civil pathos and the tendency to true representation of the historical setting. This can be observed in his paintings The Solemn Entry of Alexander Nevsky into Pskov (1793-94), The Trial of Strength of Yan Usmar (1796-97), Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov is Called to Rule the Tsardom (around 1800; all these reposited in the State Russian Museum). Ugryumov also practised religious painting (icons for the iconostasis of Kazan Cathedral, 1808-10) and portraits. He was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery.
