STASOV Vladimir Vasilievich (1824, St. Petersburg - 1906, St. Petersburg), art and music critic, arts historian, ethnographer, public figure, Honorary Member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1900), son of V.P. Stasov. Stasov graduated from the School of Jurisprudence (1843), served at the Cadastral Department of the Senate (1843-48) and the Heraldry Department (1848-51). Retired in 1851 and devoted himself to science and art. Since 1855, Stasov worked in the Imperial Public Library (today Russian National Library); in 1872, he was appointed to head the Department of Arts and Technology (there is memorial plaque on the building of the library). Since 1847, Stasov published topical, polemical articles on fine arts, literature and music in St. Petersburg periodicals. He struggled against academicism and decadence of salon art, and advocated the development of realistic, pithy and original national art. Stasov influenced the development of aesthetic principles of the Itinerants and the new musical school, he called the Mighty Five. Stasov wrote on the history of Russian and Western European art, and monographs on the works of Russian artists and composers (M.I. Glinka, A.P. Borodin, A.G. Rubinstein, K.P. Bryullov, A.A. Ivanov, I.E. Repin, I.N. Kramskoy, M.M. Antokolsky et al.), historical and archaeological research articles (including works on folk ornamental patterns, Russian epics (byliny), Old Russian manuscripts, and the reign of Emperor Nicholas I). In 1861 he was elected member of the Russian Archaeological Society (in 1861-64 - editor of News, the Society’s publication). Lived at 26 Mokhovaya Street (1854-73, memorial plaque), Nos. 26 (1882-90) and 36 (1890-96) Znamenskaya Street (today Vosstania Street), 20 Suvorovsky Avenue (since 1896). Stasov was buried in the Necropolis of Art Masters (a monument designed by sculptor I.Y. Ginzburg was unveiled on the grave in 1908).
