LEBEDEV Vladimir Vasilievich (1891, St. Petersburg - 1967) painter and graphic artist, people's artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1966), corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR from 1967. He was trained at the workshop of F. A. Rubo in 1910-11, at the Academy of Arts and at the art school of M. D. Bernstein in 1910-14. He contributed to the journals Satirikon, Argus, Novy Satirikon in the 1910s. He was one of the founders of Petrograd Windows of ROST and did over 500 posters for it in 1919-21. He did drawings for artistic porcelain at the State Porcelain Factory in 1918-19. He painted the graphical series Laundresses from 1920 to 1925, Panel of Revolution in 1922, the New Economic Policy in 1925-27, merging cubism within the genre of cheap popular print. He painted female portraits and nudes in the spirit of impressionism, Woman with Guitar, 1930, exhibited in the State Russian Museum. He taught at the Central College of Technical Drawing in 1918-21 and at the Academy of Arts from 1922 to 1924. In 1924-33 he was an artistic editor of the children's section of the State Publishing House. He developed an original style in children's book illustrations (The Elephant's Child by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1921; Circus, published in 1925, and Mister Twister, published in 1933, by S. Y. Marshak etc.). He lived on 11 Belinsky Street from 1922 to 1967 where there is now a memorial plaque. He was buried in Bogoslovskoe cemetery.
