MASTERS OF ANALYTICAL ART (MAI), the Collective of Masters of Analytical Art, the Filonov School, an artistic union organized by Filonov's students of the Academy of Arts in 1925. MAI based its artistic ideology on Filonov's theoretic works Pictures Made (1914), The Declaration of the Universal Flowering (1923), Ideology of Analytical Art and the Principle of Madeness (1923). The classes took place at Filonov's apartment (19 Literatorov Street). Membership of the group was constantly changing; over 70 artists visited classes at different times (Tatyana Glebova, Boris Gurvich, Evgeny Kibrick, Pavel Kondratiev, Alisa Porett, Andrey Sashin, and Mikhail Tsybasov). The first MAI exhibition (1927) was held in the House of Press (21 Fontanka River Embankment), and afterwards the group's works were displayed in the exhibitions Modern Leningrad Artistic Groups (1928-29) and Artists of the RSFSR Over the Last 15 Years (1932-33), and other small exhibitions held in the Academy of Arts. Members worked together on the interior design of the theatre hall and foyer of the House of Press to stage Gogol's The Inspector General there (1927, director Ignaty Terentyev). In the early 1930s, some artists (Gurvich, Kibrick, Sulimo-Samuyllo,) left the group due to an internal split. Designing the Finnish legend Kalevala (1933) became the last joint effort of the Filonov School. The group's classes continued until Filonov's death in 1941.
