NEW SOCIETY OF ARTISTS, art association founded in 1903 on the initiative of artist D. N. Kardovsky (chairman) by his pupils I. E. Repin and A. I. Kuindzhi. Intended to support graduates and graduates-to-be of the Academy of Arts, both mentally and financially. Charter approved in 1904. The association was joined by K. F. Bogaevsky, A. F. Gaush, B. M. Kustodiev, M. P. Latri, A. A. Murashko, P. I. Neradovsky, N. A. Okolovich, A. I. Savinov, L. V. Shervud, and A. V. Shchusev. The society held ten exhibitions between 1904 and 1917 at the Academy of Arts, the Stroganov Palace, the Passage, and N. E. Dobychina's Art Bureau, showing over 180 artists. Exhibitions were then shifted to Moscow. Although its aesthetic foundation was in academic neoclassicism, the society also represented artists of modern trends, including D. D. Burlyuk, V. V. Kandinsky, M. V. Matyushin, A. A. Exter, and A. G. Jawlensky. The society dissolved in 1917.
