ALKONOST, a private publishing house established in 1918 by S.M. Alyansky for publication of symbolist works; it was named after the mythological bird. The publishing house was located at 1 Kolokolnaya Street and was partially assisted by the People's Comissariat for Education. Alkonost published almost all the post-Revolutionary works of A.A. Blok (including the first separate edition of his poem The Twelve with the illustrations by artist Y.P. Annenkov, who designed the publisher's mark of Alkonost), books of A. Bely, Vyach.I. Ivanov, K. Erberg (K.A. Syunnerberg), A.M. Remizov, A.A. Akhmatova, R.V. Ivanov-Razumnik, almanacs Zapiski Mechtateley (Parts 1-6, 1919-22) and Serapionovy Bratya (1922). Books published by Alkonost were remarkable for their original design (artists A.Y. Golovin, V.D. Zamiraylo, N.N. Kupreyanov, A.N. Leo et al.). In 1922 the publication of a number of editions was transferred to Germany, until the publishing house ceased to exist in 1923. Altogether, Alkonost issued 58 titles.
