LENINSKIE ISKRY (Lenin's Sparks), children’s and youth newspaper. It was founded as part of the North-West bureau of Children's Communist groups and Leningrad regional committee of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Union, later as the organ of the Leningrad the regional party committee and city committee of the All-Union Leninist Communist Youth League and Leningrad Soviet of the Pioneer Organisation. Its first issue appeared on 31 August 1924, with frequency varying form once to twice a week at different periods. During the Great Patriotic War 1941-45 publication was interrupted. From 1957 the newspaper published a monthly children's journal Iskorka. Throughout the time K.I. Chukovsky, S. Y. Marshak, Maxim Gorky, Аrkady Gaydar, Boris Zhitkov, V. V. Bianki, L. Panteleev, Lev Kassil, Olga Bergholz, V. S. Shefner and many others contributed to the periodical. In 1991 the newspaper was closed. The editorial office was located at 59 Fontanka River Embankment. The Leninskie iskry was succeeded by the newspaper Pyat uglov (which first appeared as its supplement in September 1989; the editorial office is located at 4 Ninth Sovetskaya Street).
