THE PHYSIOLOGY OF PETERSBURG, parts 1 and 2, 1845, St. Petersburg, collected sketches, compiled of works of noted Russian writers under Nikolay Nekrasov's editorship in bookseller A. Ivanov's publishing-house. Vissarion Belinsky wrote four of the 12 works included in the collection: Introduction, Petersburg and Moscow, Alexandrinsky Theatre, Petersburg literature. The edition also encompassed physiological sketches, becoming the genre's classic: Petersburg corners (part of Nekrasov's unfinished novel Life and Adventures of Tikhon Trostnikov), Petersburg Yard-keeper by V. Lugansky (pseudonym of Vladimir Dal), Petersburg feuilletonist by I. I. Panaev, Petersburg Organ-grinders by D. V. Grigorovich. The authors of the collection did not intend so much as to give a description of St. Petersburg in any respect, but rather to characterise it (Belinsky). The collection contained duplicated ornaments (imprints of woodcut drawings) by V. F. Timm, Е. I. Kovrygin, R. K. Zhukovsky.
