CHULKOV Mikhail Dmitrievich (1743 or 1744-1792) writer. He did not receive a systematic education. He was in St. Petersburg in 1761-83; it was here that his literary activity started. In 1769, he published one of the first ever Russian satiric journals I To i Se; in 1770, he published the monthly journal Parnassky Shchepetilnik. From 1770, he served at the Senate Office. Chulkov went down in the history of Russian folk studies as the first publisher to systematise manuscript collections of songs, publishing from 1770 to 1774 Collection of Various Songs. The story by Chulkov Comely Cook, or Adventures of the Depraved Woman (1770) became an experiment in the creation of a picturesque novel with elements of sensuality aimed for the middle class audience.
