SEVERYANIN Igor (born Igor Vasilievich Lotarev) (1887, St. Petersburg - 1941), poet. He lived in St. Petersburg until he was nine, then he studied in a professional school in Cherepovets. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1904. In 1905 he made his literary debute in The Leisure and Business journal. In the early 1910s he was at the head of the group of egofuturists (I.V. Ignatyev, K.K. Olimpov, V.Gnedov, G.V. Ivanov et al.), but broke off with them in 1912. Severyanin gave performances at poetical soirees, and became famous throughout Russia, a renown ensured by the appearance of his collection of poems Thunder-raging Cup in 1913 and a series of "poetic concerts" given over the whole country. He was an active member of the poetical life of St. Petersburg, where he appeared on the stage of literary-artistic cabaret Brodyachaya Sobaka (Stray Dog). The characteristic features of Severyanin's poetry consist in the combination of fancifulness and pomposity on the verge of lack of taste with the energy of a verse, its accuracy and melodious character. Severyanin lived in Gatchina (the house was not preserved), in 1918 he left for Estonia.
