MARSHAK Samuil Yakovlevich (1887-1964), poet, translator, playwright. In 1902-04 studied in the Third Petersburg Gymnasium. On returning to St. Petersburg from Yalta in 1907, he contributed to Satirikon and other journals. Studied in Great Britain (polytechnic; in 1913-14 heard a course of lectures at London University), where he started translating English and Scottish folk ballads (published in 1915-17 in Petersburg journals, along with the translations of poems by William Blake and William Wordsworth). Lived in Petersburg from 1922. Marshak is credited with the foundation of modern children's literature. Headed the Repertoire Department of the Young Spectators Theatre, wrote plays for it - fairy tales in verse, worked in the circle of children writers of the Institute for Pre-school Education (48 Moika River Embankment). Established the journal for children Vorobey (Sparrow) (from 1924 Novy Robinzon), initiated the creation of journals Chizh and Ezh; in the 1920-30s his books for children: Kids in the Cage, Fire, Tale of a Little Mouseling, The Book about Books, Luggage, Post, Such an Absent-Minded, Mister Twister and others were published in Leningrad. In 1935 Marshak's collection for children Fairy Tales, Songs, Puzzles was issued and republished several times. In 1924-37 headed the Children Department of Gosizdat State Publishing House (located in the House of Books), where he developed around himself a large group of talented writers, artists and editors. In 1937 the editorial staff of Marshak was persecuted, many of them were repressed. In 1938 Marshak moved to Moscow. He was awarded the Stalin Prize on numerous occasions (1942, 1946, 1949, 1951), and the Lenin Prize (1963). In 1922-27 he lived at 10 Potemkinskaya Street, in 1927-38 - at 14 Pestelya Street (memorial plaque).
